Herbert “Snooky” James Scharenberg, age 80 of Montello passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Aspirus Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Snooky was born in Chicago on December 23, 1942 to Herbert and Ruth (Mara) Scharenberg. He graduated from Montello High School in 1960 and went on to serve his country as a member of the National Guard Red Arrow Division from 1960 to 1964. He was activated and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Snooky married Barbara “Barb” Beahm on May 1, 1965 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello, together they were blessed with one daughter.
Snooky was a rural route mail carrier for 28 years until he retired in 2005. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, traveling to 48 out of the 50 states and classic cars. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting with his cousins in the Fall and water sports in the summer. He started his career at White Lake Beach Resort (the business his grandparents started in 1926). He was a lifeguard and a bartender, among having many other jobs for the family business. After his father passed away, he became a third-generation owner with his brothers. During his retirement days, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Snooky is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara and daughter, Angela (Jeff) Davis of Montello as well as his sister, Norma (Al) Radosta of Boulder City, Nevada and brother, Frank (Edie) of Montello. He is also survived by grandchildren: Samantha Shultz and Patrick Shultz; step-grandchildren: Audrey Mera, Emily Davis and Erin Davis and great step-grandson, Henry as well as sisters-in-law: Virginia (Michael) Kallas, Shirlee and Sandra Beahm and brothers-in-law: Richard (Donna) Beahm and Russell Beahm. Snooky is further survived by nieces and nephews: Violet Radosta, Jennifer Scharenberg and her two children: Theresa Langdon and Curtis Scharenberg, Kathy (John) Kunce, Kate (Aaron) Seals, Carolyn Radosta, Darrell (Joy) Beahm, Yvonne (Jeff) Davis, Holly (Kevin) Daywalt, Lori (Stuart) Shelton, Kari (George) Kramer, Derrick (Michelle) Beahm, Shawn (Brittany) Beahm, Erica (Chris) Cox and Jaclyn Schmidt.
Snooky is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws: Gordon and Evelyn Beahm, brother, Edward “Eddie” Scharenberg, nephews: Charles Radosta, Thomas Scharenberg and Dan Bunin and brothers-in-law: Ronald and Robert Beahm.
A funeral service for Herbert “Snooky” Scharenberg will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Crossroads Family Church in Wautoma. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 PM at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello and again at the church on Monday one hour before the service. Pastor Andy Bollant will preside and burial will with full military honors by American Legion Post #351 of Montello will immediately follow the service at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Montello. A luncheon will be served at White Lake Beach Resort following the committal. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to The Budda Box Fight Against Cancer, P.O. Box 591, Montello, WI 53949.
