Orlan E. Warnke, age 98 of Montello passed away peacefully Thursday morning, January 10, 2013 with his great-niece by his side at Whispering Pines CBRF in Plover. Orlan was born in Germania on October 2, 1914 to Henry and Clara Warnke. He graduated from Montello High School in 1932 and valiantly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II in both North Africa and Europe. Upon returning from service, Orlan went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until he retired. Orlan was a man of many talents; he was a published author, an amateur cartoonist as well as an avid harmonica player. After retiring in 1974, he spent countless hours in the outdoors crossbreeding and raising many different trees and plants. Orlan also enjoyed Ham Radios, taking walks and working on genealogy projects. He was also a longtime member of American Legion Post 351 of Montello. Orlan is survived by one brother, Charles of Georgia and nephews: Thomas Warnke, James Warnke and Robert Warnke as well as one niece, Cindy Warnke. He is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Orlan is also preceded in death by his brothers: Arden in infancy, George and Darwin. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 9:30a.m. until the hour of service. Pastor David Ficken will preside and burial with full military honors by American Legion Post 351 of Montello will follow the service at the Germania Lutheran Cemetery.
