Merle Cain

Merle Lee Cain, age 87 of Montello, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, October 13, 2010 at the Markesan Resident Home. Merle was born in Washington, Pennsylvania to Harry and Pauline (Nanetta) Cain on July 26, 1923. He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1941 until 1945. He spent most of his life working as a steamfitter and it wasn't until August 4, 1980 that he married Lois Kratz in Missouri. Merle enjoyed working with his hands, building bird houses and other useful items. He also spent many hours playing cards, bingo and gardening. Family was very important to Merle; he looked forward to the many holiday gatherings and fun times they had together. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife, Lois, five children: Rhonda (Patrick) Gaither of Montello, Julie (Dennis) Pedersen of Pardeeville, Joann Pafford of Westfield, Keith (Mary) Johnson of Montello and Kurt Johnson of Montello. He is also survived by one brother, Donald (Margaret) of South Carolina as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends. Merle is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Donna Barchtell. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home with Pastor Rob Bruinooge officiating. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until the hour of service. Military honors will be performed by Legion Post 351 of Montello following the service.
