Margaret Atkinson

Margaret "Peggy" O. Atkinson, age 85 of Montello passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at her home. Peggy was born in Portage on March 6, 1932 to Robert and Norine (Vaughn) Schmitz. She graduated from Montello High School and furthered her education at the Wautoma Normal School for Teaching and later completed her Masters Degree at UW-Stevens Point. Peggy married Wayne Atkinson on September 16, 1950 in Montello and from that union they were blessed with four children. Wayne preceded Peggy in death on June 21, 1999. Peggy was an elementary teacher at Montello Public Schools for 24 years and was proud to have taught some of her grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Montello, serving for many years as part of St. Ann's Altar Society. Peggy enjoyed sewing, playing cards and volunteered as part of the Montello Women's Club for over 40 years.

Peggy is survived by her four children: Dale (Mary Ellen), Mike, Mary (Dale "Bud") Daggett all of Montello and Cathy (Ervin Souzek) Atkinson of Wautoma. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Amy (George), John (Wendy), Kara, Steve (Jodi), Katie (Sam), Gary (Abby), Brian (Sydney) and Crystal (Emily) and six great-grandchildren along with special friend, Dennis Collins. Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne and brother, Bob (Maxine) Schmitz. A Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret "Peggy" Atkinson will be held on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Montello and again on Monday at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Father Paulraj Sellam will celebrate the Mass and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family for memorials that will be established in Peggy's name with several local organizations.
