Howard E. Puterbaugh, age 78 of Montello passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, November 14, 2012 at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena with his brother Stanley at his side. Howard succumbed to fast growing kidney cancer. He was born in Oregon, Wisconsin on December 20, 1933 to Arthur and Ina (Belz) Puterbaugh. Howard graduated from Montello High School in 1951 and on February 7, 1953 he married Hazel Cragin at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Packwaukee. He served four years in Naval Reserves with two years active duty as Radar Man Third Class aboard the Troop Transport U.S.S. Magoffin, stationed out of San Diego, CA. Following his service he returned home and worked at Speed Queen, Ripon for 40 years, taking early retirement at age 62. Howard was baptized and confirmed into Trinity Lutheran Church, Packwaukee and was an active member over the years in various offices of the church counsel, currently a trustee. Howard was a faithful husband, father and grandfather; avid fisherman, hunter and horseshoe trophy holder. He also enjoyed making sausage and spending time in his garden. Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hazel and four children: Dennis (Debra) of Cedarburg, Cheryl Eichsteadt of Dakota, Vickie (Ray) Gradel of Dalton and Kevin of Montello as well as daughter-in-law, Cathy (Dan) Heath of Delavan. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: Jason, Michael (Marie), Jessica (Tony), Zachery, Amy, Eric, Josh, Natalie, Tabitha, Tiffany, Matt, Greg, Erin, Jackie and Micah as well as eight great-grandchildren: Jazmon, Avery, Landon, Marissa, Mari Ella, Taylor, Nathan and John Paul. Howard is further survived by his brother, Stanley (Vickie) of Oxford. In addition to his parents, Howard is also preceded in death by his son, Robert and three siblings: David, Charles and Betty (Jimmy) Hatcher and their daughter, Linda Simonson. He is also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Roger Eichsteadt and great-granddaughter, Jessica Ann Marie. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Packwaukee. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello and again on Monday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service. Pastor Frank Giebel will preside and burial with full military honors by American Legion Post 351 of Montello will follow the service at Underhill Cemetery, Packwaukee Township.
