Howard E. Gaffney, age 94 of Oxford passed away Wednesday morning, September 17, 2014 at Harris Villa Assisted Living in Westfield. Howard was born in Oxford on Christmas Day, December 25, 1919 to Arthur and Eva (Leddick) Gaffney. He graduated in 1938 from Oxford High School and continued his education at Waushara Normal School. Howard served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II; earning multiple medals for his service in the European Theatre. Upon returning home from service, he married Bethel Nelson on October 27, 1958 in Westfield and she preceded him in death in 1991.
Howard worked as the Postmaster at the Oxford Post Office for 31 years. He was a charter member of both VFW Post #6003 of Oxford and the Oxford Lions Club. Howard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oxford where he served as an elder and trustee; he also served his community as a member of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department. In his spare time, Howard enjoyed traveling as well as reading and most of all spending time with his family and friends.
Howard leaves behind his three children: Kim (Martha) of Oxford, Dorothy (Michael) Roney of Montello and Kevin (Cheryl) of Neshkoro and six grandchildren: Kimberly (Jon) Mast, Katie (Matt) Bignell, Abbey (fiancAC. Chris Stenske) Gaffney, Kevin Roney, Kayla and Ashley Gaffney. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Mitchell, Taylor, Alexis, Noah, Gracie, Ryan and Tyler as well as nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Howard is preceded in death by all his siblings: Edna Laing and Eldon and Willard Gaffney.
A memorial service for Howard will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Oxford. Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Together, Pastor Brenda Pulver and Pastor Carol Hermann will preside and full military honors will follow the service at the church. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date at the Oxford Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Howard's name.
