Harlan J. Atkinson, age 80 of Buffalo Township passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Tuesday evening at the Montello Care Center after fighting Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's disease. Harlan was born in Packwaukee to John and Madeline (Markofski) Atkinson on August 2, 1930. He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 and on February 20, 1954 he married Mary Wianecki at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Montello. Harlan was a very hard worker; he farmed most of his life as well working for others such as: CJ Berst Co. (now known as AMPI) of Portage, Williamson's fruit farm of Montello and also the Marquette Co. Highway Dept. Harlan was also a member of American Legion Post 351 of Montello and enjoyed hunting and watching Nascar. Harlan leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Mary and five children: Dennis (Connie) of Montello, Diane Buchholz of Oshkosh, Dorene (special friend Russ Puterbaugh) Atkinson of Montello, Darrin (special friend Vickie) of Montello and Darlene (Tim) Zellmer of Horicon. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Virginia Wilson, many cousins, nephews, nieces and dear friends. Harlan is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Francis Wilson. A Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Father Michael Richel will officiate and burial with full military honors will take place at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the U.P. Cemetery, Buffalo Township, Marquette County. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family. Crawford Funeral home of Montello is serving the family.
