George Wakup

George Charles Wakup , age 81 of Montello passed away peacefully Thursday, June 4, 2020 at his home.  George was born in Chicago to George H. and Violet (Lorenz) Wakup on November 4, 1938.  Following graduation from high school, George proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force and also the National Guard.  He was united in marriage to Norma Rutt in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 8, 1961 and from that union they were blessed with three children.

George was employed by Danley Machine; he traveled the globe installing machines for automobile manufacturing.  He was very proud of his time in service and always enjoyed flying.   In 2000, he and Norma relocated to rural Montello and George became very active in American Legion Post #351 in Montello.  He volunteered many hours at the Post and also enjoyed playing pool.  George will be remembered for his sense of humor, pride for his country and the love he had for his family.

George is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Norma and three children: Victoria (Stanley) Urbanski of Chicago, IL, Mary Wakup of Shorewood, IL and George W. Wakup of Midlothian, IL.  He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Dawn, Jennifer (Ryan), Sara (Pat), Kimberly (John), Violet (Sergio), Damien and Benjamin as well as six great-grandchildren.  George is further survived by his sister, Virginia (James) Kopacz, other extended family members and friends.

George is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, William Ferry and grandchildren: Eric, Samantha and Elizabeth as well as siblings: Joann (Robert) Calvin and Raymond (Geri) Wakup.

A funeral service for George Wakup will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the hour of service.  Pastor Mike Vargo will preside and military honors by American Legion Post #351 will immediately follow the service.  George will be laid to rest on Thursday at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.  In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family for a memorial that will be established in George’s name.
