Elizabeth 'Betty' Newhouse, age 86 of Madison, formerly of Montello passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, July 25, 2012 at Oakwood Village in Madison. Betty was born at home in Montello on November 14, 1925 to Antone and Hilda (Kronser) Weiske. She was a 1944 graduate of Montello High School and on September 13, 1948 she married John 'Bud' Newhouse in Montello at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Together they owned and operated Grove-Newhouse Clothing Store until Bud's death in February of 1989. Betty was a caring person who was always willing to help anyone in need. She was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she served on the church council. She was also a member of St. Ann's Altar Society and the Women's Catholic Order of Foresters. Betty was honored in 1981 by the Montello Chamber of Commerce as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year. Some of the hobbies she enjoyed were cooking, playing cards, reading, watching movies and spending time with her family. Survivors include her five children: Laura Davis of Superior, Barbara Newhouse of Neenah, Kathryn Newhouse of Madison, Gordon Newhouse of Sun Prairie and Beth Mattes of Brookfield. Betty is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and brother-in-law, George Thompson of Texas. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and many friends. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters: Lucille Griffeth, Mary Stoeberl and Dorothy Thompson. She is also preceded in death by her son-in-law, John Davis, great-grandson, Michael Emmanuel Davis, niece, Sharon Schonig and nephew, Pat Griffeth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 277 E. Montello Street, Montello. Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until the hour of service. Father David Carrano will preside and burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Montello.
