Dorothy A. Galbraith, age 81 of Montello passed away peacefully at her home with her daughter, Kathleen McReath and Judi Nigbor and other close friends by her side Sunday evening, April 19, 2015 after a short battle with cancer. Dorothy was born at home in LeSueur County, Minnesota to Joseph and Anna (Fillipek) Ginter on January 26, 1934. She married Melford Galbraith on April 10, 1953 and he preceded her in death on July 2, 1982. Dorothy was a cook for many years at the Davis House Hotel; she also loved to refinish furniture that her and Mel would sell at their antique store south of Montello. She also painted and stained the inside of many homes in the area. Dorothy loved to watch the Packers, Badgers and Brewers as well as tend to her flower gardens in her backyard. She also enjoyed fishing with friends, crocheting afghans for gifts and the residents at the Montello Care Center. Dorothy will always be remembered for cooking, baking and going to rummage sales. Dorothy is survived by two daughters: Kathleen (Judi Nigbor) McReath and Linda (Tom) Cotter, both of Montello and one son, Mel "Butch" (Heidi) of Westfield. She is also survived by grandchildren: Matthew Mertely of Chicago and Michelle (James) Bromley of London, England as well as many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy is further survived by her son-in-law, Mike Mertely of Nekoosa and two siblings: Irene David and Clarence (Donna) Ginter as well as Autumn Stowell, who Dorothy considered a granddaughter, many nieces, nephews and her canine companion, Gypsy. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Gail Mertely, son, Edgar, two sisters: Helen Hauer and Evelyn Bateman and one brother, Joe. A memorial service for Dorothy will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the Crawford Funeral Home in Montello. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Brenda Jahns-Grams will preside and inurnment will follow the service at the Montello City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred for a memorial that is being established in Dorothy's name. A special thanks to the wonderful people at Home Health United Palliative Care and Hospice for their care of Dorothy during her final days. Dorothy was a kind and giving person who put others first, managed to find strength during difficult times and those who knew her well will remember her for her occasional vodka and seven in a "tall glass."
