Bernice Wegner

Bernice Meta Wegner, age 91 of Montello passed away Monday, January 8, 2024 at The Montello Care Center.  Bernice was born at home in the Town of Montello to Gustave and Mata (Schrank) Heller.  She attended Montello Schools and married Byron Wegner on July 16, 1949 at Emmanual (Big Mecan) Lutheran Church.  Together they raised their two sons in the Montello area; Byron preceded Bernice in death on February 25, 1994.  Bernice was a talented seamstress and worked for the Weyenberg’s shoe factory in Portage as well as Berger’s in Montello.  She also enjoyed playing the organ, fishing, crocheting and taking care of her lawn.  Bernice will be remembered for her energetic and outgoing personality.

Bernice is survived by her son, Robert (Bernice) of Montello and daughter-in-law, Barbara Wegner of Baraboo as well as five grandchildren: Stacy (James) Haase, Kimberly (Patrick) Cummings, Wendy (Marcus “Fred”) Logemann, Melissa Wegner and Becky Wegner.  She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Bevyn, Lily, Aiden and Byron as well as two brothers: Arnold (Mary) Heller and Adolph “Joe” (JoAnne) Heller.  Bernice is further survived by sisters-in-law: Marian Heller and Donna Wegner along with other extended family members.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons: infant David Roger and Larry Byron, infant granddaughter, Sarah Wegner, brother, Albert Heller and brothers-in-law: Donald (Mabel) Wegner and Jerry Wegner.

A funeral service for Bernice Wegner will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Montello.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the hour of service.  Rev. Pete Zietlow will preside and Bernice will be laid to rest privately at the Harris Cemetery later in the day.
