Bernadine Hartwig, age 82, of Montello passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, February 22, 2012 at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac. Bernadine was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1929 in La Crosse, WI to Elmer and Luella (Hensel) Voshart. She was born again through baptism on December 15, 1929 and confirmed at Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crosse on April 2, 1944. Bernadine was a 1947 graduate of La Crosse Central High School and furthered her education at La Crosse State Teachers College for one year. She married Robert Cass of Neenah in 1950. He preceded her in death in 1958. In 1963 she married Rev. Paul Hartwig and he preceded her in death in 1987. Bernie enjoyed a full life, never sitting still for long. But when she was sitting, her hands were always busy with knitting. She loved to travel, covering much of the globe during her retirement years. And she loved taking walks, for many years with her beloved dog, Hutch. Bernie loved the Lord and was active in her church. She also served her Savior and his people by volunteering over many years for the Hospice Hope and for WELS Builders for Christ. Left to mourn and rejoice that she is in heaven are her children: Marie (David) Cole of Morro Bay, CA, John (Helen) Hartwig of Mequon, WI, David (Barbara) Hartwig of Tampa, FL and Robin Cass of South Milwaukee, WI. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Bernadine is further survived by sister and brother-in-law, Don and Helen Timmermann of Milwaukee, nine nieces and nephews and many friends and other relatives. Bernadine is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three brothers: Delbert in infancy, Eldon (Alberta), Earl (Lorraine) and nephew, Rod Voshart. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 313 E. Montello Street, Montello. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church and also on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Rev. Philip Schupmann and Pastor Pete Zietlow will officiate together and burial will follow the service at Emmanuel (Big Mecan) Lutheran Cemetery, Mecan Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church or Christian Life Resources or St. Agnes Hospice or Marquette County Commission on Aging.
