Alfred Schmudlach

Alfred "Alfie" Harvey Schmudlach, age 92 of Montello passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. Alfie was born in Glen Oak, rural Marquette County at home on September 23, 1923. He graduated from Montello High School in 1942 and went on to proudly serve his country during World War II as member of the United States Air Force in Italy. Following his time in service, he returned to Montello and married Gladys Gaatz on November 12, 1949; she preceded him death on March 18, 2015. Alfie was a lifelong resident of Montello. He worked for over 40 years for the Fox River Co-op mostly delivering fuel oil, he also was known as general handyman. Alfie served on the Montello Area Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years, served on the Montello City Council and was an active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving on several different committees and as an elder. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post 351 of Montello. Alfie is survived by two brothers: Jerry (Judy) of Monona and Maynard of Madison as well as sister-in-law, Wilma Schmudlach of Waupun. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers: Ervin, Rhynold and Clarence. A funeral service of Alfred will be held on Saturday, December 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montello. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church. Pastor Pete Zietlow will preside and burial with full military honors by American Legion Post 351 of Montello will follow the service at Montello Eastside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to either St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 313 E. Montello St., Montello 53949 or The Budda-Box Fight Against Cancer, P.O. Box 91, Westfield, 53964.
